CHAPTER NINE

ADAM WOKE EARLY to the sound of birdsong outside. He was feeling good, content, safe, and it took him a moment to realise why and remember that he hadn’t spent the night alone. He opened his eyes, hoping to see Jess still there, her hair across his pillows, to watch her as she continued to sleep. But he saw with immense disappointment that she had gone.

When had she left him?

How was she feeling after their shared night?

He sank back against the pillows and hoped she was all right. What had driven him to do that last night? To take their friendship and push it in another direction entirely? Had he just been seeking a distraction? Something joyful that felt good after the horror of his nightmare? Had he simply sought consolation in her arms? Did that mean he had used her?

He hoped not. He had genuine feelings for her. He was attracted by her compassion, her sensitivity, her caring. Physically, he’d been attracted to her since day one... But he was her mentor, and he had sought a physical release with her without considering what it might do to them as friends.

The way her face had looked as she’d gasped his name, her lips open as she breathed against him, the heat of her breath against his neck...

Selfishly, he just wanted to put that moment in his mind and treasure it. Keep it. She’d felt so soft and warm and right.

He sat up in bed, swinging his legs so that his feet were on the floor. Should he go and knock on her door? See how she was? Make sure everything was still okay between them before he headed into work? He didn’t want there to be any awkwardness between them.

He sat for a moment, trying to figure out how he felt with her gone.

It was funny how a man could change in so short a time. When his father had first asked him to work with her he’d almost been a little bit resentful at being put with such a junior doctor. But then he’d got to know Jess...got close to her.

And now he was finding himself missing her when she was gone. Missing her smile, missing her laugh, missing the way she made him feel when she was around... He missed how wonderful it felt to be close to her.

Something was
